What does a body scan actually measure?

In 45 seconds, an InBody570 scan breaks your weight down into muscle, fat, water, protein and minerals, body part by body part, for over 40 measurements. Here's what the key numbers mean and why they matter.

Your results, explained

10key measurements40+measurements in total

Every InBody570 scan gives you over 40 measurements. These 10 are the ones we'll walk you through on screen. All of them are in the free InBody app, and your FluxBody portal tracks the main ones over time.

01score

InBody Score

Your overall body composition in one number. More muscle and less fat pushes it up, so it's a great single number to chase.

02kg

Skeletal muscle mass

The muscle attached to your bones, the muscle you can train and grow. More muscle supports strength, metabolism and healthy ageing.

03kg

Body fat mass

The total weight of fat in your body. Tracking it on its own shows real fat loss, separate from changes in muscle or water.

04%

Body fat percentage

Fat as a share of your total weight. A far better guide to health and progress than weight or BMI alone.

05level

Visceral fat level

Fat stored deep around your organs. InBody recommends keeping it under level 10, as higher levels are linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

06kcal

Basal metabolic rate

The energy your body burns at complete rest. Useful for setting nutrition targets, and it rises as you build muscle.

07L

Total body water

All the water in your body, and the balance inside and outside your cells. Hydration affects performance, recovery and your other results.

08kg

Protein

Mostly held in your muscle. A low reading can point to under-eating or muscle loss.

09kg

Bone mineral content

An estimate of the minerals in your bones. Especially worth tracking for women and older adults, though it's not a bone density test.

105 parts

Muscle by body part

Segmental lean mass: how much muscle is in each arm, each leg and your trunk. Spots imbalances from injury, rehab or uneven training.

Plus 30 more in your results, including BMI, body water balance, fat in each body part and weight-control targets. We'll point out anything worth paying attention to.

Scan vs scale

The scale says −2 kg. Your scan says a lot more.

Using bathroom scales to measure progress is like reading the first chapter of a novel and guessing the rest. Plenty of people give up because the number barely moves, even when they're doing everything right.

How it works

Bioelectrical impedance, done properly

A tiny electrical current you won't feel passes through 8 contact points at your hands and feet. Water-rich muscle lets it through easily and fat resists it. The InBody570 measures that resistance at multiple frequencies across 5 body parts, so it calculates your composition instead of guessing from your age or gender.

How to prepare for your scan

Consistency is what makes results comparable. We send this list with every booking confirmation.

  1. 01Scan before exercise, ideally on an empty stomach and bladder. If not, avoid eating 1–2 hours before.
  2. 02Remove excess clothing, jewellery, metal belts and watches.
  3. 03Test under similar conditions each time: clothing, time of day, food intake.
  4. 04Keep a normal level of hydration for the 24 hours before.
  5. 05Stand upright for 5 minutes before scanning.
  6. 06We'll wipe your palms and soles to improve conductivity.
  7. 07Avoid talking or moving during the 45-second scan.

Common questions

How often should I get scanned?

Every 4–8 weeks is ideal. Muscle and fat change slowly, so scanning much more often mostly shows day-to-day noise.

Just don't leave it too long. If you're heading in the wrong direction, the longer you go without knowing, the longer it can take to get back on track. A lot can happen in 6–12 months, and without a recent scan there's no good reference point to show what's working and what isn't.

How long does a scan take?

The scan itself takes 45 seconds. Allow a few extra minutes for us to walk you through your results.

How accurate is it?

InBody's multi-frequency analysers are validated against DEXA, the clinical reference method. For tracking progress, consistency matters most: same machine, same conditions, every time.

Is it safe?

Yes. The current is tiny and you won't feel it. The only people we can't scan are those with an implanted electronic medical device.

Do I need to be a member to scan at a gym?

Not for scan days listed on our calendar, which are open to everyone and usually $35. Some gyms keep their scan days for members only; those aren't listed publicly.

Where do my results go?

We're paperless. We go through your results with you on screen straight after your scan, then they're yours in the free InBody app and your portal at my.fluxbodycomposition.com.au.
